The 22nd Hurston/Wright Legacy Awards

An evening celebrating Black literary excellence, hosted by Damon Young and Panama Jackson.

The Hurston/Wright Legacy Award honours the best in Black literature in the United States and around the globe. Introduced in 2001, the Legacy Award was the first national award presented to Black writers by a national organization of Black writers. Fiction, nonfiction and poetry honorees are selected in a juried competition.

Join us for an evening of fun, lively and engaging conversation with local authors Jen Sookfong Lee, Harrison Mooney, and Ellen Schwartz. Moderated by William George Lindsay.

Jen, Harrison and Ellen will be talking about their new memoirs Superfan: How Pop Culture Broke My Heart, Invisible Boy: A Memoir of Self-Discovery, and Galena Bay Odyssey: Reflections of a Hippie Homesteader. The discussion will focus on the process of writing a memoir, from developing the initial idea to publishing. A Q&A will follow the panel discussion.

Unbound Summer Open Mic

Neworld Theatre and Unbound Reading Series present the Unbound Summer Open Mic, a literary and community event, for all, that celebrates Black creative writers, hosted by Harrison Mooney and featuring readings from emerging and published writers, and a special featured guest reader: Jasmine Sealy!

In association with Room magazine, Wildfires Bookshop and Rise Up Marketplace, the summer open mic will include a giveaway, curated books for sale, and delicious treats available for purchase.
